Stacked Stone Cladding: Stack Stone vs Ledge Stone

Stack stone or ledge stone? How the two stacked stone cladding formats differ in size, depth, finish and shadow - and which suits a UAE feature wall or facade.

Stacked stone cladding comes in two main formats - fine, uniform stack stone and deeper, rugged ledge stone - and the right one depends on wall and exposure. Both are natural stone cut into horizontal strips and laid in tight courses, so from a distance they look related. Up close, they behave very differently: one reads as tailored, the other as rustic, and that difference shows most on a sunlit facade.

Here is how to tell them apart, and how to choose between them for a villa, hotel or commercial project in the UAE.

What is stacked stone cladding?

Stacked stone cladding is natural stone cut into long, narrow pieces and set in horizontal layers so the wall looks like dry-stacked masonry, without building a solid stone wall. It is one of five patterns in our natural stone cladding collection, alongside crazy cladding, flagstone and brick stone - we compare all five in 5 types of stone cladding, explained. Within the stacked family, the two formats buyers most often weigh up are stack stone and ledge stone.

Stack stone vs ledge stone at a glance

  • Look: stack stone is fine, linear and uniform. Ledge stone is bolder, with a pronounced natural face.
  • Size: stack stone is cut to 15 x 60 cm strips, or to a custom size. Ledge stone comes in multiple course sizes.
  • Thickness: stack stone runs 20-30 mm. Ledge stone runs 20-40 mm, which is where its deeper shadow comes from.
  • Stone: stack stone is available in slate, sandstone and marble. Ledge stone is cut from sandstone.
  • Finish: stack stone in natural, honed or shotblast. Ledge stone in natural, shotblast or bush hammered.
  • Best for: stack stone suits interior feature walls and reception walls. Ledge stone suits entrance walls, boundary walls, fireplace surrounds and sunlit facades.

When to choose stack stone

Choose stack stone when the brief calls for texture that still feels precise. The narrow strips and tight joints give a clean, modern line, which is why it works so well behind a TV, along a hotel lobby or on a reception wall seen at close range. The colour range is also the widest, from black slate through sandstone to white marble and copper quartzite, so it is easier to match to an existing interior palette.

When to choose ledge stone

Choose ledge stone when the wall needs presence from a distance. Its deeper, uneven face throws strong shadow lines once the sun hits it at an angle, so an entrance wall or boundary wall with evening sun comes alive in a way a flatter surface cannot. Beige, black, off-white and mixed tones are available. The trade-off outdoors is that deeper joints hold more dust, so a ledge stone facade needs washing more often than a tight-jointed one.

Picking a finish and stone for UAE conditions

Finish changes how the texture reads. A natural split face keeps the most shadow, while honed or shotblast surfaces feel softer and calmer - we cover each option in six stone finishes, explained. For exterior walls, density matters as much as looks: heat cycling, humidity and salt air affect some stones more than others, which we go through in choosing stone for the Gulf climate. Tell us whether the wall is shaded, coastal or in full sun, and we will recommend a stone that will hold up there.

Made to order, installed by our own teams

We source and cut our stone at our own workshops in India, so strip sizes, thickness and finish can be adjusted to your wall rather than forced into a stock format. Our own installation teams work across the UAE, which means the person assessing your substrate is the same team fixing the stone.

Frequently asked questions

Is stacked stone the same as ledgestone?

The names are often used interchangeably, but in our catalogue they are two formats. Stack stone is cut into narrow, uniform 15 x 60 cm strips for a tailored look. Ledge stone is laid in longer courses with a deeper, more irregular face and heavier shadow lines.

Can stacked stone cladding be used on exterior walls in the UAE?

Yes, provided the stone and finish suit the exposure. Dense sandstone ledge stone in a natural or bush-hammered finish is a common exterior choice. Deep-faced formats collect more dust outdoors, so plan for occasional washing.

Is stacked stone good for interior feature walls?

Yes. Stack stone in slate, sandstone or marble is one of the most popular choices for TV walls, reception walls and fireplace surrounds, because it adds texture without looking rough.

How much does stacked stone cladding cost in the UAE?

Price depends on the stone, the format, the finish, the thickness and the wall area, plus installation access. Because every order is cut to your project, we quote from drawings or site measurements rather than a fixed rate.

How is stacked stone cladding installed?

It is fixed to a prepared, sound substrate, starting from a level base course and working upward. On exterior and taller walls our installation team assesses the substrate first and specifies the fixing method before work begins.
