Choosing a Stone Bench for a Garden or Entryway

Plinth, capsule, folded or boulder - how to choose a solid stone bench by form, size, stone and finish for a UAE garden, courtyard or entryway.

Choose a stone bench by deciding where it sits first, then its form, stone and finish, so it works for real seating and not only for the photograph. A bench is the simplest piece of furniture in stone: one block, one purpose. That simplicity is why proportion, edge and surface matter so much. There is nowhere for a poor decision to hide.

Start with the place, not the shape

A bench in a garden, a courtyard and an entrance hall faces three different jobs. Outdoors it meets sun, dust and the occasional splash, and it usually sits against a wall, a planting bed or the edge of a path. Indoors it is closer to a sculpture that also happens to seat two or three people. Decide which, and whether guests will sit for a minute or an hour. A bench for waiting while putting on shoes can be sharp-edged and architectural. A bench for lingering in a garden should be softer to sit on.

Four forms, four moods

The benches in our Stone Articles collection fall into a few families. Plinth Bench is a single rectangular block, polished on every visible face, supplied at 150 x 40 x 45 cm. It is the most architectural seat we make. Monolith Capsule Bench rounds every edge into a soft capsule silhouette at 150 x 60 x 45 cm, which makes it gentler to sit on and a good fit for a lobby or a garden. Paper Bench is carved to look like a single folded sheet, with sharp creases where the stone appears to bend. Rock Bench sets a polished seat against a raw-carved boulder, so the contrast between machined stone and natural rock face is the whole idea.

Depth and height decide comfort

Most of our benches are around 150 cm long with a 45 cm seat height, which suits most adults. Depth is where they differ. A narrow 38-40 cm profile is slim enough for a path edge or a corridor, but it is more of a perch. A 60 cm profile is a proper seat. Because every piece is made to order and can be resized, we can cut a longer bench for a wall, or a shorter one for a landing, rather than forcing a standard size into the space.

Stone and finish

Our benches are offered in marble, granite, basalt and sandstone, depending on the design. Marble gives the widest range of colour and veining. Granite and basalt are denser and darker, and suit outdoor use well. Sandstone brings warmth and a softer grain. Finish then changes how it feels under the hand: polished is richest in colour, while honed is calmer and more forgiving. We compare the options in six stone finishes, explained.

Plan for sun and weather

A bench in full sun behaves differently from one under a pergola or in a shaded courtyard. Tell us whether the spot is open, shaded or near the coast, and we will suggest a stone that suits it. Our guide to choosing stone for the Gulf climate covers how different stones respond to heat, humidity and salt air. If the bench will sit beside a pool or water feature, the notes on choosing stone paving for a UAE pool deck are worth reading too.

Think about the ground underneath

A solid stone bench is heavy, and it needs a flat, firm base. Paving, a gravel bed and a lawn all need different preparation, so tell us the surface early. Our own installation teams across the UAE handle delivery and placement, so access, steps and levels can be planned before carving, not discovered on the day. For outdoor schemes, a bench pairs naturally with pieces from the Landscape and Outdoor collection, such as sculpture, boulders and paving.

Send us the space

Send us the location, the approximate dimensions and a photograph. We will suggest a form, size and stone that fit, instead of a generic recommendation.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a standard stone bench?

Our catalogue benches are supplied at about 150 cm long and 38-60 cm deep, with a seat height of 45 cm. Every piece is made to order, so length, depth and height can be adjusted to your space.

Which stone is best for an outdoor bench?

Our benches are offered in marble, granite, basalt and sandstone depending on the design. For a bench in full sun, choose the stone with the exposure in mind and tell us whether the spot is shaded, coastal or open.

Should a stone bench be polished or honed?

Polished shows colour and veining at their richest. Honed is calmer and more forgiving of daily use. Plinth Bench is polished, while Plinth Bench 2 is fully honed.

Can a stone bench be used indoors?

Yes. A solid stone bench works well in an entrance hall, at the foot of a staircase or in a lobby, where it doubles as a sculptural object.

Who delivers and places a stone bench?

Our own installation teams across the UAE handle delivery and placement. Tell us about access, steps and the surface it will stand on early, because a solid block is heavy.
