Caring for Natural Stone in a UAE Home

Sealing, cleaning and everyday habits - a practical guide to keeping carved stone, cladding, basins and tables looking their best in a UAE home.

Caring for natural stone in a UAE home comes down to three habits: seal the porous stones, clean with a pH-neutral product and keep acids off polished faces. None of this is difficult, but it is easier to do from day one than to correct later. The stone you choose and the finish you pick decide how much care it needs.

Start with the stone and the finish

Most care problems begin with a mismatch between material and use. Marble is the most porous of the common stones and shows its veining beautifully, but it stains and etches more readily. Granite and basalt are denser and more forgiving day to day. Sandstone and limestone sit in between and are the usual choice for walls and facades. If you are still choosing, our guide to choosing stone for the Gulf climate explains how heat and salt air change the answer.

Finish changes how a surface ages

A polished face reflects light and looks superb, but it also shows scratches, water rings and etching more readily. Honed and bush hammered finishes hold up better because small marks disappear into the surface texture. Our explainer on six stone finishes shows what each one looks like and where it works best. For a busy family bathroom or a dining table, a honed finish is often the calmer long-term choice.

Seal the porous stones

Sealing slows the rate at which liquid soaks into the stone, which gives you time to wipe a spill before it leaves a mark. It matters most for marble near constant water, such as a bathtub or a stone basin, and for polished inlay underfoot. It helps every stone, but it does not replace choosing the right material. Ask us which sealer suits the stone you order, and follow that product's own instructions for reapplying it.

Clean gently and often

Warm water, a soft cloth and a cleaner made for natural stone are enough for most surfaces. Choose a pH-neutral product. Vinegar, lemon, bleach and general-purpose bathroom sprays can dull marble and limestone, and abrasive pads leave scratches. Dry the surface afterwards to avoid water spots, which show most on a polished bowl or tabletop.

Everyday habits for furniture

Stone furniture in the Stone Articles collection is made to be used, but a few habits protect it. Wipe up wine, coffee, citrus and oil quickly, because acidic food and drink can etch marble. Use coasters and trivets on tabletops, as covered in our guide to choosing a stone dining table, and place felt pads under heavy objects that will be moved.

Cladding and inlay need less fuss

Textured natural stone cladding hides everyday marks well. Brush or vacuum dust from the surface, and rinse exterior stone with clean water now and then to remove dust and salt. Underfoot, inlay benefits from a doormat at the entrance, because grit is what scratches a floor, and from prompt cleaning of spills.

Plan care before the stone arrives

The cheapest moment to think about maintenance is before you order. Tell us where the piece will sit, how much water, sun and traffic it will see, and how much upkeep you are happy with. We source and carve our own stone at our workshops in India, every catalogue design is made to order, and our own installation teams work across the UAE. You can browse the full catalogue or send us a photograph of the space for a recommendation.

Frequently asked questions

How do I clean natural stone at home?

Use warm water and a cleaner made for natural stone, which is pH-neutral. Avoid vinegar, lemon-based products and harsh bathroom sprays, because acids can dull and etch marble and limestone.

Does natural stone need to be sealed?

Porous stones such as marble benefit from sealing, especially near constant water contact or underfoot. Sealing helps every stone, but it is not a substitute for choosing the right stone for the setting.

Which finish is easiest to live with?

Honed and bush hammered finishes hide minor marks and wear better than polished faces, which show scratches, water rings and etching more readily.

Can I use the same care for indoor and outdoor stone?

The principles are similar, but outdoor stone also faces sun and salt air. Rinsing salt deposits and choosing a stone suited to outdoor use matter more outside.

Can JJM advise on care for a piece I order?

Yes. Every piece is made to order, so we can talk through the stone, the finish and a sensible care routine for the room it will sit in.
